WeightPlot.com is built to be easy to read for everyone, on any screen, including people who use screen readers, magnification or keyboard navigation. The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

What has been done

Readable type

Text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute for readers with low vision. Body text is 18 pixels on phones, so nothing needs pinching to read.

Contrast

Text and background colors are checked against the AA contrast ratio. The bright lime brand color is never used for text on white.

Structure

Headings follow a real hierarchy, every guide has a contents list, and data tables use proper header cells, so screen reader users can move through a page by structure.

Charts and figures

Every chart has a text description, and the numbers it shows also appear in a table or in the text, so nothing exists only as a picture.

Keyboard and motion

Everything can be reached by keyboard with a visible focus outline, expandable sections use native browser elements, and animation respects the reduced-motion setting.

Works without scripts

Navigation, the contents list and the question sections all work with JavaScript turned off.

Known limitations

  • Some charts are dense on very small screens. They scroll sideways rather than shrink, and the same figures are always in the text.
  • Outside websites that guides link to, including government and research sites, follow their own accessibility practices.
